During the military dictatorship in Argentina, a political militant and a homosexual share a Buenos Aires prison cell. Trying to ease the continuous fear and solitude of their incarceration, the prisoners talk to each other for hours. Whilst the militant remembers his past and fantasizes about his future, the homosexual takes refuge in an alternate, romantic and dreamy reality, recounting the plots of films he has seen years before, going into great detail on scenes from stories that he himself would like to have lived. Kiss of the Spider Woman is an elegantly constructed and gripping novel about love and persecution. Successfully brought to the cinema in the USA by Héctor Babenco, Kiss of the Spider Woman was also adapted into a Broadway musical which met with great international acclaim.
