Periplo is a chronicle of Filloy’s 1930 journey through the Mediterranean basin, visiting Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Jerusalem. The title derives from Ptolemy, who had called “periplo” (“voyage by ship”) the accounts of his crossing of the Mediterranean. This first work outlines most of the textual practices that Filloy will incorporate in the rest of his work: the quotation, the Plato-like dialogue, the detailed and illuminating observations, the paradoxical reflection, as well as the puns and his obsession with etymology.
